piriformis

Deep buttock muscle

The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttock, running from the lower spine to the top of the thighbone.

It helps rotate the hip outward.

The piriformis is notorious for causing pain when it tightens or spasms, sometimes irritating the nearby sciatic nerve: My piriformis is acting up again.
