dictionary
Alphabetized meaning guide
The core meaning of dictionary is a list of words arranged alphabetically, along with their definitions.
This meaning is extended to many other kinds of specialized lists of entries, such as a dictionary of biography (one that contains short biographical sketches about important people) or a rhyming dictionary (one that enables you to find the rhymes of a given word).
The computer age expanded the meaning further and today dictionary is used to describe any formatted list of words, such as the list used by a spellchecking program or the list of legal commands in a computer language.
