map scales
Cartographic proportion indicators
Map scales express the ratio between distance on a map and distance in the real world.
A scale of 1:100,000 means one unit on the map equals 100,000 of the same units on the ground.
Scales appear as ratios, bars, or verbal statements: one inch equals one mile.
Large-scale maps show smaller areas in greater detail; small-scale maps cover more territory with less detail.
