jurisdictions
Courts' areas covered
Jurisdictions is the plural of jurisdiction, which refers to the territory or sphere over which legal authority extends.
A court has jurisdiction over certain types of cases; a police department has jurisdiction within city limits.
The term also names the authority itself: The matter falls outside our jurisdiction.
Different jurisdictions—countries, states, municipalities—have different laws: Some jurisdictions allow recreational marijuana; others don't.
