thesaurus

Vocabulary reference book

A thesaurus is a word reference book that groups words according to their semantic relations.

The most common relation, and the one for which people often consult a thesaurus, is synonymy: words that share a similar meaning, sometimes representing various parts of speech, are grouped together in a thesaurus.

Other relations that may be discoverable in a thesaurus include antonymy (opposites), hypernymy and hyponymy (relations between more general and more specific words), and meronymy (relations of parts to wholes).
