atlases

Geographic reference volumes

Atlases are bound collections of maps.

The name comes from the Titan Atlas of Greek mythology, often depicted holding the world on his shoulders—an image that appeared on early map collections.

By extension, atlas refers to any bound collection of illustrations or charts on a single subject: an atlas of human anatomy, an atlas of brain imaging.

The plural atlantes refers to architectural columns shaped like male figures.
