funicular

Steep slope railway

A funicular is a railway system for steep inclines, using two counterbalanced cars on cables—as one descends, it helps pull the other up.

Common on mountainsides and in hilly cities: We took the funicular up to the castle.

As an adjective, funicular describes anything relating to ropes or cables under tension.
