funiculars

Steep slope railways

Funiculars are cable railways designed for steep inclines, where ascending and descending cars counterbalance each other on parallel tracks.

The system uses a continuous cable loop—as one car goes up, the other comes down.

Common in mountainous cities and tourist destinations: The funiculars of San Francisco are beloved landmarks.
