free weight

Unattached lifting mass

Free weight refers to weightlifting equipment not attached to a machine—barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and weight plates.

Unlike machines that guide movement along fixed paths, free weights require the lifter to control the motion: I prefer free weights to cable machines.

The term emphasizes freedom of movement in all directions.
