landline

Wired home telephone

A landline is a telephone connected by physical wires, as opposed to a mobile phone.

The term emerged as cell phones became dominant, retroactively naming what had simply been "the phone": Do you have a landline, or just your cell?

Landlines are associated with home phones, older technology, and reliability during emergencies when cellular networks fail.
