faxing

Sending documents telephonically

Faxing is sending documents electronically over telephone lines, where a machine scans the original and transmits it to a receiving fax machine that prints a copy.

The technology dominated business communication in the 1980s and 1990s but has largely given way to email and digital file sharing: I spent the morning faxing contracts to the office.

Some industries—law, medicine, government—still rely on faxing for its perceived security or regulatory compliance.
