carbon copy

Pre-Xerox office duplicate

A carbon copy is a duplicate document made using carbon paper, which transfers ink to a sheet beneath the original.

The term persists in email's "cc" field for sending copies to additional recipients.

Figuratively, a carbon copy is any exact replica: The sequel was a carbon copy of the original film.
