typikon

Orthodox liturgical instructions

A typikon is a liturgical rule book in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, prescribing the order of services, fasting regulations, and the calendar of feasts for a monastery or church.

The term comes from Greek meaning "conforming to a rule." Different monasteries and national churches may follow different typika, each with local variations in how services are conducted: The monastery follows the Athonite typikon. (Capitalized Typikon may refer to a specific named text.)
