novella
Mid-length prose work
A novella is a work of fiction longer than a short story but shorter than a novel—typically between 17,000 and 40,000 words.
The length allows more complexity than a short story while maintaining the compression and unity of effect that novels often sacrifice: Kafka's "Metamorphosis" and Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" are classic novellas.
