penpal
Distant letter friend
A penpal is a person with whom you exchange letters, typically someone you've never met in person.
The relationship exists primarily through correspondence, often across long distances or between different countries: I had a penpal in Japan when I was twelve.
The term emerged when letters were written with pens; despite email and messaging largely replacing postal mail, penpal persists for any correspondent-based friendship.
