Emancipation Proclamation
Civil War freedom order
The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring that all enslaved people in Confederate states were free.
It did not immediately free anyone, since it applied only to territories outside Union control, but it transformed the Civil War into a fight against slavery and allowed Black men to serve in Union forces.
The proclamation was a wartime measure; the Thirteenth Amendment later abolished slavery throughout the United States.
