upliftment

Raising someone's spirits

Upliftment is the act or process of uplifting—raising someone's spirits, improving their condition, or elevating them morally or socially.

The word appears most often in South African and Indian English, where it frequently describes efforts to improve disadvantaged communities: programs for the upliftment of rural areas.

Elsewhere, *uplift* typically serves the same purpose.
