emancipating

Releasing from bondage

Emancipating is the act of freeing someone from bondage, oppression, or restriction.

The word most often appears in historical contexts—Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, the emancipation of serfs—but extends to any liberation: an emancipating experience, emancipating yourself from old habits.

A minor legally freed from parental control is an emancipated minor.
