Juneteenth

Emancipation commemoration date

Juneteenth is an American holiday commemorating the end of slavery, observed on June 19th.

The date marks when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce emancipation—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Long celebrated in Black communities, it became a federal holiday in 2021.

The name blends June and nineteenth.
