connecting rods

Crankshaft-to-piston links

Connecting rods are the metal links in an engine that connect the pistons to the crankshaft, converting the pistons' up-and-down motion into rotation.

They're critical components in internal combustion engines—a thrown rod (one that breaks loose) typically destroys the engine.

Also called con rods.
