manhole covers
Heavy urban discs
Manhole covers are the heavy lids, usually circular and made of cast iron, that seal access holes in streets and sidewalks.
They cover utility openings for sewer, electrical, and telecommunications maintenance.
The circular shape prevents the cover from falling through its own opening—a square lid could slip through diagonally.
Workers pried up the manhole cover to access the water main.
