H-beam

Flanged structural support

An H-beam is a structural steel beam with a cross-section shaped like the letter H—two parallel flanges connected by a perpendicular web.

The shape provides strength while minimizing weight, making H-beams fundamental to construction of buildings, bridges, and other large structures.

Also called an I-beam, though technically the two differ slightly in proportions.
