common reed

Tall marsh plant

Common reed is a tall perennial grass that grows in wetlands, marshes, and along waterways throughout much of the world.

It spreads aggressively through underground stems and can form dense stands that crowd out other vegetation.

The dried stalks have been used for thatching, basket-weaving, and making musical instruments.

Also called *Phragmites australis* or simply phragmites.
