spartina

Coastal wetland grass

Spartina is a genus of coarse grasses that grow in salt marshes and coastal wetlands, commonly called cordgrass.

The plants tolerate brackish water and help stabilize shorelines against erosion.

The spartina along the estuary was thick with nesting birds.

Spartina species are ecologically important but can become invasive outside their native range.
