garlic mustard
Pungent woodland invader
Garlic mustard is a plant with heart-shaped leaves that smell of garlic when crushed.
Native to Europe, it has become an aggressive invasive species in North American forests, crowding out native wildflowers.
The leaves are edible and were historically used as a potherb: Garlic mustard makes a peppery addition to salads.
