commonality

What links them

Commonality is a feature or characteristic shared by two or more people, things, or groups.

When you identify commonalities, you're finding what connects otherwise distinct entities: The researchers found surprising commonalities between the two cultures.

The word also refers more abstractly to the state of sharing features or being held in common.

In older usage, commonality could mean ordinary people collectively, as opposed to nobility, but this sense has largely faded.
