slough

Swampy waterlogged depression

Slough has two pronunciations with different meanings.

Rhyming with "now," a slough is a swamp or muddy area, or figuratively a state of despair or degradation: a slough of despond.

Rhyming with "stuff," to slough is to shed or cast off, as a snake sloughs its skin.

Extended: slough off dead cells, slough off responsibilities.
