polder

Sea-stolen Dutch farmland

A polder is low-lying land reclaimed from the sea or a lake, protected by dikes and kept dry by pumping.

The word comes from Dutch, where polders define much of the landscape—large portions of the Netherlands exist below sea level, maintained as polders.

The term appears in geography and engineering contexts: The new polder added thousands of acres of farmland.
