peatland
Waterlogged organic terrain
Peatland is land consisting largely of peat—partially decomposed organic matter accumulated over thousands of years in waterlogged conditions.
Peatlands include bogs, fens, and moors, and store vast amounts of carbon.
When drained or burned, they release greenhouse gases: Restoring degraded peatlands is a climate priority.
