cosmonaut
Russian space traveler
A cosmonaut is a Russian astronaut—a person trained to travel and work in space as part of the Russian (formerly Soviet) space program.
The distinction is purely national: Americans are astronauts, Russians are cosmonauts, though both do the same work.
Yuri Gagarin became the first cosmonaut to orbit Earth in 1961.
