cockpit karst

Enclosed depression landscape

Cockpit karst is a type of limestone landscape characterized by large, bowl-shaped depressions surrounded by conical hills.

The depressions resemble cockpits—enclosed arenas—and form through dissolution of rock over millennia.

This terrain dominates parts of Jamaica and Puerto Rico: We flew over the cockpit karst of the island's interior.
