open cockpit
Roofless flight station
An open cockpit is an aircraft cockpit without an enclosed canopy, exposing the pilot to the elements.
Early aircraft all had open cockpits; enclosed designs came later.
The term now evokes vintage biplanes, barnstormers, and the romantic era of early aviation: He flew an open cockpit biplane with goggles and a leather helmet.
