cockpits

Pilots' control rooms

Cockpits is the plural of cockpit, which originally meant an arena for cockfighting.

The enclosed, confined sense carried over to the pilot's compartment in an aircraft, the driver's area in a racing car, or the helmsman's station on a boat.

A cockpit may also be any scene of intense conflict: the cockpit of war.
