macaroni

Cheese's classic partner

Macaroni is pasta in the form of short curved tubes, most familiar in macaroni and cheese.

The word once had a now-obsolete meaning: an 18th-century dandy who affected Continental fashions—hence "stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni" in "Yankee Doodle," mocking American colonists as pretentious rustics.
