penicillium
Blue cheese mold
A penicillium is any fungus of the genus Penicillium, characterized by brush-shaped spore-bearing structures.
These common molds appear as blue-green fuzzy growths on bread, fruit, and cheese.
Some species produce penicillin, the first widely used antibiotic; others are used to ripen Roquefort, Camembert, and other cheeses.
The lab cultured penicillium to study antibiotic resistance. (Capitalized Penicillium is the genus name.)
