freeboard
Above the waterline
Freeboard is the distance between the waterline and the deck of a boat or ship—the portion of hull that remains above water.
Adequate freeboard prevents waves from washing over the deck and swamping the vessel: The canoe rode low with almost no freeboard.
The term extends to dams and levees, measuring height above water level.
