leeboard

Hull-mounted stabilizing plank

A leeboard is a wooden board or fin mounted on the side of a flat-bottomed boat, lowered into the water to prevent sideways drift when sailing.

Leeboards serve the same function as a centerboard or keel but attach externally to the hull rather than running through it: Dutch barges traditionally use leeboards rather than keels.
