carets

Proofreader's upward arrows

Carets are the wedge-shaped marks (^) used in proofreading and editing to indicate where something should be inserted.

The pointed end shows exactly where missing text belongs: The editor placed a caret between "the" and "house" to insert "old".

In computing, the caret appears in programming and markup languages with various functions.
