Highlighting is marking text with bright color to draw attention to it—originally with fluorescent markers on paper, now also the digital equivalent in documents and websites.
More broadly, highlighting means emphasizing or drawing attention to something: The report highlights the need for reform.
In hair styling, highlights are lighter streaks added for contrast and dimension.
