escape character

Disables special meaning

An escape character is a character that changes how the following character is interpreted in computing.

A backslash before a quotation mark tells the system to treat it as a literal quote rather than a command.

Escape characters let programmers include special symbols in strings that would otherwise have functional meaning: Use \n for a newline.
