exponentiation

Raising to powers

Exponentiation is the mathematical operation of raising a number to a power.

In 2³ = 8, the base (2) is multiplied by itself the number of times indicated by the exponent (3).

Exponentiation produces rapid growth—exponential growth—which extends metaphorically to anything increasing at an accelerating rate: The virus spread exponentially.
