burgh
Scots chartered town
A burgh is a Scottish town with special legal or trading privileges, historically a self-governing municipality.
The term is roughly equivalent to the English borough and appears in many Scottish place names: Edinburgh, Pittsburgh (the American city borrowed the spelling).
The royal burghs of Scotland held certain rights granted by the crown.
The word is pronounced with a guttural Scottish ending or anglicized to rhyme with "burrow."
