common land
Village grazing ground
Common land is land owned collectively or held in trust for public use, where local residents have traditional rights to graze livestock, gather firewood, or fish.
In England, commons were historically vital to rural economies before enclosure privatized much of the land.
The term survives in place names and in phrases like the tragedy of the commons, describing how shared resources tend toward overuse.
