burgher

Prosperous town dweller

A burgher is a citizen of a town, particularly one with full civic rights and responsibilities.

The word evokes medieval European cities where burgher status conferred privileges—voting, trading, property ownership.

Today it sounds archaic or deliberately formal: the prosperous burghers of Amsterdam.

In South African English, burgher specifically meant a citizen of Dutch descent.
