burgess

Colonial Virginia legislator

A burgess is a citizen of an English borough, historically one with full municipal rights including the privilege of voting.

The term dates from medieval times when boroughs granted special status to certain residents.

In some contexts, a burgess was a representative sent to a legislative assembly: The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first elected assembly in colonial America.

The word is now largely historical. (Capitalized Burgess is a surname.)
