witenagemot

Anglo-Saxon assembly

A witenagemot was an assembly of nobles, bishops, and other important figures in Anglo-Saxon England who advised the king on matters of state.

The term literally means "meeting of wise men." These councils wielded significant influence, participating in decisions about law, taxation, and even royal succession: The witenagemot gathered to choose the new king. (Capitalized Witenagemot may appear at sentence beginnings or in formal historical texts.)
