blacktop

Dark road coating

Blacktop is asphalt paving, the dark surface material used for roads, driveways, and parking lots.

The word often refers to the paved surface itself: kids playing basketball on the blacktop, miles of empty blacktop stretching ahead.

As a verb, to blacktop is to pave with asphalt: They blacktopped the driveway last summer.
