subbase

Layer beneath pavement

A subbase is the layer of material beneath a base, particularly in construction.

In road building, the subbase lies between the natural soil and the base course that supports the pavement: The contractor laid gravel for the subbase.

In mathematics, a subbase is a collection of sets that generates a topology through finite intersections and arbitrary unions.
