off-road

Beyond paved surfaces

Off-road describes travel or activity away from paved surfaces—on rough terrain, dirt trails, or wilderness: off-road driving, off-road vehicles, off-road tires.

The term applies to vehicles designed for such conditions and the activity itself: We went off-road to reach the campsite.

Off-roading is the recreational practice.
