natural asphalt

Petroleum-derived road material

Natural asphalt is asphalt that occurs in nature rather than being refined from petroleum.

It seeps from underground deposits and accumulates in pools or lakes, most famously the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles and Pitch Lake in Trinidad.

Also called native asphalt or mineral pitch, it has been used for waterproofing and road construction since ancient times.
